The Federation was formed in 1932 and is currently based in Christchurch, it provides an umberella organisation for over thirty clubs spread throughout New Zealand having a combined total membership in excess of 1,100. These clubs have been established for many years with several having been in existence for between 70 and 90 years, the oldest was established 120 years ago.There are also thirteen specialist bodies which cater for the different species of birds.
The Federation is the governing body and sets the rules for showing and judging at the many shows staged by clubs throughout the country.
It also adjudicates in any disputes, as well as providing awards at the annual National Show to winners of all the various sections.
